Continuing a well established tradition, over twenty students representing all the majors in our department attended the 2024 Economic Scholars Conference at the Federal Reserve. Six of our students either presented, served as session chair, or were discussants.
The conference started with a welcome from Edward S. Knotek II, Senior Vice President and Director of Research and closed with remarks from Loretta J. Mester, President and Chief Executive Officer. Both spoke of the importance of economic research and building the pipeline of minoritized populations in economics. Both remarked about the quality of research from our students multiple times. Wooster was well represented in almost every session!
A wide variety of topics were explored. For example, Rosa Spurgeon, discussed her thesis about “Perceptions in Advertising: An Examination of Body Diversity, Consumer Responses, and Preferences.” She was then followed by Sukriti Chiripal who presented on “The Impact of Exchange Rate Volatility on International Trade: A Study of Indian Agricultural Trade.” Vonne Slayden presented on “Bills, Bias, and Labor Market Outcomes: Examining U.S. Transgender Workers’ Economic Experiences During the 2020s Rise of Anti-Transgender Legislation” and finally Amanda Iskin, presented her research “From Platforms to People: An Empirical Analysis of the Influence of Peer-to-Peer Lending on Financial Inclusion.”
