Here are some key events and accomplishments for this Fall focussed on student activities.
We have two student organizations affiliated with our Economics department. The first is WWGME which supports students with gender identities that are traditionally underrepresented in the field of Economics. They organized a virtual career panel on Sept 27 that featured our alums, Sanjana Kumbhani ’17 (Walmart Financial); Bolanle Oladeji ’23 (Microsoft); Srushti Chaudhari ’22 (Wind Pioneers); and Maddison Buckely ’22 (New England Law).
The second organization, one the longest running student investment club’s in the US, is called the Jenny Investment Club (JIC). This club manages a portfolio of a little over US$8 million. This year’s officers, RM Hoque, Rayan Dos Passos, Alan Musabeyezu, and Ben Van Horssen travelled to the Student Managed Investment Fund Consortium Conference in Chicago. The managed to secured an “Honorable Mention” coming in fourth place in the poster presentation. Congratulations!
We recently hosted the Wilson Speaker, Dan Griffis ’94. Griffis spent two whole days in the department – visiting classes, the Jenny Investment Club, and giving the keynote address which was well attended by students and community members. Don Kohn ’71 also presented a guest lecture on “The History of the Federal Reserve Bank of the United States,” in the course, History and Philosophy of Economic Thought. Our department benefits from a unique culture of alumni engagement with current students. We are truly grateful for their sustained support.
Finally, students in the Economics of Mobility and Migration class attended a Great Lakes College Association (GLCA) Symposium called Roots and Routes of the Global Migration Crisis. The symposium brought together scholars and students from the GLCA and international institutions to explore migration, displacement, and settlement from national and global perspectives. Over two days, students participated in three sessions: (i) Setting the Stage: Borders, Walls, and Boundaries in the Contemporary Global Migration Crisis; (ii) Journey & Resilience of Refugees: Routes, Temporary Settlements and Refugee Camps and (iii) The Experiences and Challenges of Resettlement: Solidarity, Coalition, and Resettlement of Refugees in Destination Communities.
