The liberal arts provide excellent preparation for a career in business and for graduate study in business-related areas. The communication, decision-making, and analytical skills required at higher levels of corporate management and in small businesses are well served by Wooster’s emphasis on a broad education from a variety of areas. Wooster provides the following support for students who are considering a career in business. We provide personalized support, from majors to tailored advising for students that are seeking alternative pathways into business.
Business Economics major . Wooster’s economics department has graduated over 800 business students for close to half a century! Students have gone onto careers in Finance, Accounting, Marketing, Consulting, and Management. In addition to completing this analytical major, students are encouraged to consider courses in the languages, mathematics, English, computer science, speech, psychology, and sociology.
For students interested in International Business, there is an integrated course of study that includes language, culture, and business economics components. Students should consult with the Chair of Economics or with the chairpersons of respective cultural and language programs for additional information.
Students who are interested in graduate study in management or business (M.B.A., CPA, D.B.A., or Ph.D.) can select any undergraduate major but are encouraged to include courses in mathematics (calculus or above), statistics (ECON 11000), accounting, and several Business Economics courses at the 200-level in their plan of study.
To help students navigate a pathway to a graduate program, the College of Wooster economics department has has a long standing relationship with the Simon Business School at the University of Rochester. This relationship is part of the Early Leader’s Program, where College of Wooster students have competed for merit scholarships and are also offered financial support towards a Master’s program or an MBA. The department also mentors students as part of the Ohio 5 Business Collaborative with the Weatherhead School of Management. The program admits high-achieving undergraduate juniors to the following Weatherhead School graduate degree programs: Master of Finance, Master of Business Analytics and Intelligence, Master of Supply Chain Management, and Master of Accountancy. We also have graduate school pathways with Ohio State and University of Michigan.
